So the About and Features pages both need work, and who better than CM users to help...right? Right :)

For the About page, I'm partial to guldry & Pconwell's writeup on the wiki (plus expanding the 'CM was the first....' as currently on that page.

CyanogenMod (pronounced sigh-AN-oh-jen-mod), is a customized, aftermarket firmware distribution for several Android devices (See above for supported devices & how to install CyanogenMod on said devices). Based on the Android Open Source Project, CyanogenMod is designed to increase performance and reliability over Android-based ROMs released by vendors and carriers such as Google, T-Mobile, HTC, etc. CyanogenMod also offers a variety features & enhancements that are not currently found in these versions of Android.

More http://wiki.cyanogen..._is_CyanogenMod

CyanogenMod is free of charge, but let's face it - it takes time and effort from the CyanogenMod team to make it happen, time they could be using to work a salaried position, but instead are working on getting you the ROM you love, and doing it without asking anything in return. Like GNU says - you should think of 'free' as "free speech" not as in "free beer". On that note, the CyanogenMod team could use some beer - don't you agree? If you'd like to buy them a beer, or just thank them for all their hard work, visit CyanogenMod.com and look on the right-hand bar to donate.

For the features page ScottHW has been working hard on the wiki compiling a list of features:

Quote

In order to provide a means for Users to create Description page about CyanogenMod, I've started the CM Wiki:"Features" page

http://wiki.cyanogen...?title=Features

The point would be that the page will be NOT be created by Developers. No offense, but CHANGELOGs are just not that intuitive to the average user. I think a lot of people are just asking themselves "What is this CyanogenMod that I've been hearing about???". Hopefully this is a way to address that.

Please feel free to post your additions to each category laid out (or new categories and items), and we will add it to the wiki (or feel free to sign up an add it yourself)

Audio: Enhanced music controls: controls in lock screen and ability to do prev/next track when screen is off (this is one of the most must-have features for me)

All I did was took what was already on the wiki & cleaned it up. Pconwell also contributed to the cleaning up. ;)

Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC)
Multi-touch
The ability to store and run downloaded applications from the microSD card
Compressed cache (compcache)
Large APN list
Reboot menu
Support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering (not standard on most devices)
ADWLauncher
Easy theming capabilities via ADW
Power Widget
Spare Parts - Battery info, animation settings
Dev Tools - Infinite things to list
Allow app moving and install location
Input settings - Haptic feedback adjustments, trackball wake, menu unlock, music controls on lock screen (as mishan said)
Performance settings - Surface dithering, JIT, VM heap size, and lock messaging in memory in case
Sound settings - Ability to always play notif, rings, and alarms on speaker, specific volume levels, volume during music, quiet hours
User Interface (great CM features) - Status bar customizations, Notification area power widget, Overscrolling, screen timeout delay
Drawer settings

I'm sure there's more, that's just what I came up with from my phone and the wikipedia entry :) Hope it helps!

In kind of a hurry to get to work but off the top of my head...

Custom Music Player (possibly list features)
Custom Dialer (list differences)
DSPManager (and how it's useful)
CMParts (as mentioned above) and it's separate categories including easy UI customizations and examples
ADWLauncher (included)
Highly Customizable Power Widget (and explanation)
Customizable Notification Power panel (explained)

You may (or may not) also want to indicate if some of the features do not apply to certain models with footnotes or something else (Ex: af/zoom in Droid). Or at least that should be noted somewhere. It may not be necessary in the general "About" page...although someone taking a quick look might expect that functionality even though their model does not support it.

I like where this is going.  I was on several other threads about the same topic, but I think we should keep the discussion going here.

I'm certainly not some obnoxious spoon-fed script kiddie, but I am still relatively new to CM.  I'll never be able to be a developer here, but I'd be happy to help create and update a page like that.  If you guys do the real work, I'd be happy to help summarize it in a way that might be a bit more accessible to a broader base of users.

I wonder, would a new page/section on the CM Wiki be the appropriate venue for something like this?

Wow, snap!

I just got started on another effort but it already seems obsolete!

Alright, let's get this party started.

I'll need help, first and foremost because I am a long ways below anything of an Expert on CM, or even Android.  But I guess that's the whole point, right?

Also, there are a lot of bits and pieces that should be included, and I'm not entirely sure how the page should be structured to be comprehensive and still concise.

I'm just going to start mostly with what dandv had from above.  Hope you don't mind!

ciwrl, any interest in crowd-sourcing the work of compiling the list?

That's kind of what I was going for with the CM Wiki:"Features" page...

Im fine with a wiki/crowd sourced one, but I think for now we shouldnt spread out the effort. As you may have noticed, even with 250000 users, its hard to get a response to mundane things like this  <_<

I think combining may be better:

Have the homepage features link be a scaled back version of your wiki page, listed overall features and benefits, and have a link attached to it saying something along the lines of "For device specific features and/or details on features, click 'here' (where here points to your wiki page)".

ScottHW has been working hard on creating a features article on the wiki. I think once the features page on there is fleshed out all the way, then we should scale it down to a more overview page for the CyanogenMod homepage.

Fair enough :)

As long as we focus on ONE at a time, Im ok with that

Rewriting OP to reflect new focus re: features

Great.  I've laid out a foundation for the CM Wiki:Features page (and made a real Wiki-mess while doing it, check out the page History!).  Hopefully some folks will jump in and help me fill in the details.

I'll gladly entertain comments on the general layout on the Discussion of the page.

And I know not everyone on the CM Forum is on the CM Wiki, so I'll try to keep searching Forum threads for info to add.

I'm not a hero, just a man that likes clean wikis. :P

My two cents, I would rather see a list of features vs videos.

Additionally, I think the page should focus on features that set CM apart from stock. Mutlitouch is cool, for example, but pretty much every ROM has multitouch these days.

1. I would change the pronunciation to the wiki 'standard' (/ sɪˈænoʊdʒəŋmäd /)
2. Remove 'See above for supported devices & how to install CyanogenMod on said devices'
3. Remove the extra periods ' . '
4. Apps2SD is listed twice. (The ability to store and run downloaded applications from the microSD card & Apps2SD)
5. Is Apps2SD still considered part of CM?

Everything else looks good that I saw, but I didn't read every little letter.

Corrected the Apps2SD duplicate and made some more changes to http://wiki.cyanogen...?title=Features

Time to replace http://www.cyanogenm.../about/features ?
