The post "Upgrading from CM6 to CM7" says to:
3. Format system via recovery
4. Wipe/Factory reset
However, in ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5 on my Nexus One, I can't find where to format the system. The options presented are:
- reboot system now
- apply update from sdcard
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced
Thought it might be under "advanced", but that just has options to reboot, wipe dalvik cache, wipe battery stats, etc. None of which seem to be for formatting the system.
So, how does one format the system via ClockworkMod Recovery?

It is under mounts and storage.
Also be warned... there have been some reports of strange bugs in the OS when flashing using Clockworkmod v3.x. If you run into any issues, you may want to downgrade and try again.

Ah, thanks. Good to know. Is Clockworkmod v2.x recommended, or another recovery?

Don't use CWR 3.X, downgrade to CWR 2.X from within Rom Manager, then go through all the listed steps. Users have had issues with thier SD cards after using 3.X to format system. OR you can flash RA Recovery from ROM manager and do the listed steps.

I don't think there have been any official recommendations for us N1 users, but the problems don't seem to happen with v2.x or with Amon_RA (available under the alternate recoveries section of ROM Manager). Most forum regulars will recommend either v2.x or Amon_RA. Both work good, although Amon_RA doesn't have the option to format /system currently (needs to be done with a flashable zip)... but it is in the works for a future version.
