Where on the SD card would you create MNT folder?  Would it be on the root?

I found a different way to fix this problem.

I downloaded the apk file for google maps from www.thegadgets.net/2010/12/17/download-google-maps-5-0-apk/

then I sent the apk file to my gmail account. and opened it on my phone

the problem will accure when there is a file I have  to download from the market..

I had to try this since the above didnt work for me...

Your symlink solution works like a charm, even through reboots (I thought it wouldn't be persisted through reboots because seldom is something I want *this* simple). So thank you Totor25!

To clarify for anyone who isn't quite sure how to do this, enter these commands in the terminal emulator:
mkdir /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache
su
cd /cache
mv download download.bak
ln -s /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache download
ls -ahl .

the last step (ls -ahl .) is intended to verify that /cache/download points to /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache; there should be an entry that should look somewhat like "lrwxrwxrwx  1  root  root  33  Apr  14  03:35  download -> /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache".
Of course the timestamp (the 03:35 bit) will differ because I assume none of you reading this will be insane enough to do this at 3-thirty in the morning  :D
It's the "download -> /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache"-bit that's important. If it looks like that, then congrats, you can install big apps again!

This didn't work for me. Are there any other solutions that don't require reformatting the SD card or downloading .apks?

EDIT: Nevermind. Tried again and this time it worked. Seems like not typing su first messed something up.

Hi!

This did not work for me at start. But after reviewing I had misspell cache as cash. Thanks for this instruction, Totor25.

Is the current Google Maps 5.x restricted to specific locations only? (e.g. US only, etc)

It's not coming up in my (mobile) Android Market. And when I go to the web, it says it's not compatible with my HTC Desire. :|

Guys you are gods..THANKS A LOT..It solved my problem with downloading: Gmaps, Vplayer, RockPlayer, and other apps with more than 5MB size.

You ROCK!

The trick worked for me, but after upgrading to the latest version of Android Market from the file linked on this page, the market app crashes constantly.

I tried executing the same terminal commands again, but it doesn't help. Has settings changed? How can I make Android Market work again - preferably with cache on SD?

Edit: The fix_permissions command made i work for a while, but now it's crashing again.

CM 7.1 rc1
I followed the processes, ls -ahl . produced
         lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 aug 12 18:40 download -> /mnt/sdcard/market-download-cache

I rebooted the phone clearing the cache and davlik but still I cannot download big apps.

I had the same issue regarding large apps. I also tried the entries in the terminal emulator, but it still didn't work, but made it worse (I think I did something wrong), I couldn't install any apps anymore from the market.

I read something that when installing CM7 on the HTC desire should be done via recovery and not using the ROM manager. So what I did was installing the new Nightly CM7.1.0 and installed it via the recovery (manually).
My problem is solved now, I even have more internal memory now...

Hi,

No problem with the instructions, but my files download to /cache , not /cache/download.  Is there a way to fix that in the market app?

If not, I could probably just symlink the whole /cache directory, but I don't really want to move the dalvik cache.

Any ideas?
