1. Meeting the requirements

1.1 Devices


Before you decide to flash anything on your device, make sure your device supports it.
In this thread, we deal with:

• HTC Dream/G1,
  
• HTC Sapphire/Magic/MyTouch3G 32B,
  
• HTC Sapphire/Magic/MyTouch3G 32A EBI1,
  
• HTC Sapphire/Magic/MyTouch3G 32A EBI0 (MT3G 1.2/LE Fender edition)
1.2 Recovery


You will have to meet certain basic prerequisites, such as having a compatible recovery.

SUPPORTED RECOVERIES (descriptions and download links):

• Amon_RA recovery (Dream / Magic)
  
• Clockwork recovery (or download ROM Manager from Market) - but read the issue bellow. Recommend to flash this recovery through fastboot, for now.
ISSUES AND UNSUPPORTED RECOVERIES:

• Previous releases of Amon_RA recovery will not be fully functional out-of-the-box. (See A2SD changes)
  
• Cyanogen 1.4 + JF, and previous recovery releases, are considered obsolete.
  
• Are you missing a recovery?
1.3 Radio ...aka Which EBI am I?


IMPORTANT: Radio version determines whether you have to flash the BCrook's kernel port, or not.

See one of PsychoI3oy's explanations about EBI/radio versions.

1.4 Bootloader (SPL)


HTC Dream/G1 users ONLY:

DangerSPL [HBOOT 1.33.2005] is officially required for running CyanogenMod 5.0.x-DS Eclair.
Please see the following for further information:

• See this guide for information on DangerSPL.
  
• Download the DangerSPL
  
  
• Not comfortable with flashing DangerSPL? Try CM5 with Firerat's FR patch.
HTC Magic/Sapphire/MT3G (all versions):

Your stock ("soft") SPL will suffice, and you don't need to change it. Sometimes this may be a wise choice, in case things go wrong, and you end up having to return your device for replacement. If you have any SPL, other than stock, your service provider/reseller may refuse to reimburse you, or replace your device. The downside of having it, is the fact that it's locked, sometimes even perfected, so the useful tool called "fastboot" (found in Android SDK tools) will be nearly useless.

With that spelled out clearly, you may choose to flash an Engineering or "hard" SPL, unlocked for fastboot flashing.
However, this is not required.
All devices with Hard/Danger SPL (a side note)

Fastboot comes in handy quite often, here are a few common scenarios:

• Your recovery got erased, or otherwise corrupted. With "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" you can easily get it back!
  
• Cyanogen drops a kernel fix in form of a boot.img. You flash it using "fastboot flash boot boot.img", it works every time.
  
• A few other useful "fastboot flash" operations can be performed to restore parts of your nandroid backup.
  
• You want to try booting something up, without flashing it permanently? Use "fastboot boot" instead of "fastboot flash".

2. Downloading the mod

You download the necessary files using the links provided in Cyanogen's OP.
You may use any mirrors, the files are the same, but the important thing is verifying they are downloaded correctly.
Use your Android's Terminal to find out:

3. Installing CyanogenMod 5.0.x-DS

Before you begin, you must read what Cyanogen had to say.

2. Do a Nandroid backup!
3. Install the DangerSPL if you don't already have it
4. WIPE (I cannot guarantee an upgrade from CM-4.2 to CM-5 will work)
5. Install the ROM
6. Optionally install the Google Addon if you want Google Applications like Gmail and Market

Step 5: Wiki has all the installation scenarios.

4. Troubles


We're here for you! Please be cooperative, and provide as many details as you can. These include:


1. Exact device you are troubleshooting (Dream/Sapphire in your profile sometimes makes a big difference. Until that's resolved, please say which.)
2. Logs. For help, see these links: Official logcat guide or Wiki page
3. Kernel messages (if applicable) - located in /proc/last_kmsg
4. Trace file (if applicable) - located in /data/anr/traces.txt

If by 'white' and 'black' you mean the color of the casing, I'm afraid this is not correct. My Belgian HTC Magic is white and 32A EBI1.

yes. needs DangerSPL, make sure you have a 2.x radio (if 3.x that's fine but use the EBI1 kernel; ISTR .za Dreams being like that).

Some bug fixes, yes.
Open VPN issues were fixed, I saw a lot less memory related issues, and, as said in the changelog the stable build is more swap-friendly, if you choose to use it. Probably a lot more... Oh yes, customizable GUI via spare parts!

I'll update you if I find find/remember anything else. Memory issues for me, were reason enough to update.

EDIT:

More changes:
- New kernel
- Tweaked RIL settings for improved performance on mobile networks
- I'm guessing more fixes to improve battery life
- Fixed some camera buggers (which reminds me to add the latest fix for camera module!!)

Just flash it from recovery, and make sure to flash gapps as well. All your data will remain intact, so this should be a 5 minute job

Hello there,

With Magic32A, CM-5.0.7 and the skin "INCR: CHM_BinaryRelease_with_AnderWebs_Almost_Nexus_Launcher 2.0" (installed through CM Updater), the ACORE FC's when "Orientation Sensor" is active, and i turn my phone horizontally at the Home screen. If you need more info please tell me, however, this bug is always there so it's easy for you to check it! Some times ACORE does not Crash, but the Home icons disappear until reboot. The solution for me was to disable AWD's Orientation Sensor.

Also, sometimes the Networking stack gets crashed, i just didn't figure out yet WHEN. I keep an MMO game running, and i switch over WIFI/3G several times a day so the problem might come from there. Anyway, i have to reboot the phone at least once a day in order to get Internet up-n-running again.

Apart from these two, this is a great ROM

Hi, I am upgrading from the previous CyanogenMOD 4.0.1 and I renamed the file into update.zip (since I am using recovery JB 1.41)
The error message says: E:Can't find update script Installation aborted.

What am I doing wrong? I am on the HTC Dream (G1) Magic 32B

You aren't meeting the requirements
Please read the OP:
1. You have to have DangerSPL
2. You are recommended to have a compatible recovery - after flashing the DangerSPL, use fastboot to flash the recovery.

Hi I'm trying to put the new radio img 2.22.23.02 on my phone, upgrade from 26i, but when I flash it from ra recovery it goes through the process like its working, goes back to recovery, reboot and finishs the process, reboot again, everything seems normal, and when I go and check the radio in about phone, it still is 26i, I've been having this issue since cm 4.2.15.1, have tried other versions and get the same result. Ive tried starting from vanilla with same result, tried flashing a new spl, same result, wipe and everything same result.

Currecntly running

Use the ENG x.x.2004 or ENG x.x.2005 one.
2004 is a G and 2005 is a H

I use 2004 on my MT3G

If you are comfortable with SPL flashing, then flash one of the engineering ones (I use the one 1.33.2009).
Then, reboot to SPL, and flash the radio.img through fastboot:

fastboot flash radio /path/to/radio/radio.img

@smithma007: Don't flash 1.33.2005, that's the DangerSPL which you don't need, being on a MT3G.

I'm having a bit of an issue upgrading from 4.2.15.1 to 5.0.7...

Installed Amon_RA's 1.7.0 recovery, did the nand backup, D/L'ed both the 5.0.7 and the ERE36B files, checked the hash, already had the Danger SPL (1.33.2005) installed with the correct radio (2.22.23.02), wiped, flashed CM 5.0.7 and the GApps updater per the instructions...and got stuck on the G1 screen. Finally pulled the battery after about 30 minutes and did a successful restore back to 4.2.15.1. Tried wiping again and flashing both files, still stuck.

Was using a class 6 4GB for that try, but tried it also using a 1 GB card--for that attempt I wiped everything on the phone, reformatted the sd card with no swap and a 512MB ext3 partition and the rest FAT32, put the 5.0.7 and the ERE36B files on to the card, flashed both files, rebooted...and still got stuck the G1 splash screen.

logcat for all the tries simply says:

E/logwrapper( 57): executing /system/xbin/busybox failed: No such file or directory
I/logwrapper( 52): /system/xbin/busybox terminated by exit(255)

Any ideas?

Is there a newer radio? If so, should I upgrade? Am I on the correct SPL? How in THE hell do I update the recovery. It wont let me fastboot with the gold card method anymore. Maybe the gold card is wonky? Is there an up to date NOOB_TUTORIAL for working with the MT3G 1.2? Or am I missing something? Any help and/or suggestions ( even suggested suicidal ) are welcome! Thanks in advanced!

Are you rooted? if you have already rooted you should be able to change a recovery image in fastboot, the 1.2 root sappimg has fastboot ability fo flash recovery. If you are starting from scratch and need to root, goldcard flash is done in hboot mode, not fastboot. that's volume down+power for hboot to look for a sappimg on your goldcard.

I rooted a mt3g 1.2 this morning and then later returned it (there was quite a fiasco) but the point is that i followed the instructions to root the mt3g on the unlockr, part of the root procedure found there includes a section on flashing recovery.

You dont need to update your radio or spl, that is only a requirement for the dream/g1. (and not a requirement with firerats nonedangerspl install)

google it, the unlockr guide works, at the end instead of flash custom 1.2 fender rom, just flash cm5

What do I need to type?
