When I try to register my HTC Desire to notify me when a new version of CyanogenMod is available, it won't work.
I always get the toast, that the registration failed.
I'm using the latest CM 7.1 RC1 for the HTC Desire and installed it via ROM Manager.

Don't quote me on this, but I think I read somewhere that you need the paid for version of rom manager to have access to the the update notifications feature.

It's clear that receiving notifications inside the ROM manager requires you to use the pro/paid version. But this function is build into CM, so it would be odd if the ROM manager would somehow disable this function.

How do you know the update checking mechanism is built into CM? Isn't it possible it's just using the update checking framework built into ROM manager (which comes part of CM after all).

You probably read it on the settings screen for the update notification. I do have ROM manager premium and the registration also fails. But I do get update notifications.

Because first of all the Update-Notification-Settings are inside the Cyanogen-Settings and second of all, because I know someone who installed CM without the ROM manager and has the same settings dialog ;)

I knew I had read it somewhere.... the CM update notification settings page itself!!  I wonder if you'd be so kind as to read the text in red for me?

So without a ROM manager premium licence, this feature is NEVER going to work. However as doctormetal said, the feature doesn't work even with the ROM manager premium licence installed as I just bought it and tested it. You can however go into the ROM manager app itself and do an update check from there. It'll even download and install the update for you too.

BTW, how do you install CM without the ROM manager? It's a system update built into the ROM isn't it? Doesn't that mean it can't be uninstalled?

ROM Manager can be uninstalled by removing the .apk. It isn't required for updating or flashing CM since one can always flash straight from recovery (which I for example do anyway even though I have ROM manager installed).

Thanks for the info.

Now look at my screen! I wonder if this time you'd be so kind as to read the text in red for me?

I don't understand what you want to tell me?! That I was/am wrong and you are right? How's that possible?
I asked why the register function doesn't work, you told me to look at the red text and I told you that the red text's only visible on your device.

Got the same problem as apolix. For the record: I haven't got any red reading on that screen either,

Don;t want to argue alopix, was just annoyed that you were saying that the CM update notification system did not use ROM manager and refused to accept the possibility of what I was saying. Only then for me to be proven correct That's all.

Let's draw a line under it :)

With the 7.0 RCs it was the same. No Notifications on RCs.

Only from stable versions the notification servers accept the request --> will work with unpaid version as well but only with stables

I am on the stable 7.1 release (HTC Desire) and have ROM Manager Premium installed and I cannot register for updates.

Has this feature worked for anyone in the past few updates. I dont seem to recall this ever working, I started on the last stable release of CM6. Always had ROM manager premium as well.

It has always failed for me as well. I'm using the nightlies, have the above-noted statement in red on the notification screen, and have had a ROM Manager Premium license for quite some time. However, since I do have the premium license, I get the notifications from ROM Manager itself.

This worked last time for me when I had CM 7.0.3. I have never had premium version of Rom Manager.
