Running a Droid, version is 2.3.7. Phone says on mem info that it has 226 MB total.  Not overclocked.

I had been running 7.0.3 for about 4-5 months without any major issues, and upgraded to 7.1 earlier this week.  Since then, I've been plagued by response issues on the phone.  When it rings, sometimes it will let me answer, sometimes not.  It will eventually let me answer the phone, but usually after the caller has hung up.  It's been slow to run any number of apps as well.  Usually, the response has been that ADW Launcher has a problem or that the actual app I was running has a problem.  Usually, it's a Not Responding problem.

I believe the problem to be a memory issue.  I have Advanced Task Killer on the phone, and whenever I have response problems with the phone, I'll check it, and there will be < 10 megs of memory left.  However, there's not much running at the time.

For example - when I started this post, it's gone from 19MB down to 11MB, while the running apps (Advanced Task Killer, CraigsNotifica, Clock & DSP Manager) have remained the same.  Killing everything off but the task killer only frees up 5 megs.  Previously, the number (11MB) had been in the 50-60MB range on 7.0.3.  When I go in to Manage Applications, it shows the following items running:
  • Settings (19MB)
  • Quick Battery (2.4MB)
  • Google Voice (restarting)
  • Maps (5.6MB)
  • Google Services (8.0MB)
  • DSPManager (2.5MB)
  • Android Keyboard (6.7MB)
It's taking minutes to launch applications - if they launch at all.  For example, simply opening the Task Killer takes about 2 minutes to return the 4 apps that it says are running (it says there are now 4MB left).

Any ideas as to what I may have done wrong in updating to 7.1?

My personal, extremely biased opinion - You probably didn't do anything wrong. The Droid 1 is like a 55 year old man on an obstacle course. A 55 year old man that's in GREAT shape, but he's still 55. He's not as strong or nimble or limber as the 21 year old kid.

Droid 1 has 512 MB of memory. Half for the system (OS, system apps like Gapps and Rom Manager), half for user apps. I hope you have an upgrade soon.

There are lots of ways you can further increase efficiency and I'm certain many here will chime in and tell you how.

For me, getting a kernel that goes up to 900 Mhz has always kept my phone real snappy and nice but nowadays I'm all about keeping the phone alive. The battery is on it's last leg and only lasts 2-4 hours under moderate-heavy usage. Just got to keep this thing going until I get my NE2 upgrade in 7 days.

Thanks for the info.

If you don't mind my asking, what kernel are you using currently?
