I just got introduced to cyanogen some weeks ago when I updated my defy to CM7. The increase of speed was amazing, so after reading that the Atrix will be supported I ordered one (and hopefully will get it before christmas :)

I'm just not clear about the different mods/teams, perhaps someone can tell me if I'm right:
  • There ist native CM, build by the team here and there have been no plans to support Atrix (what changed now).
  • A spearate team took CM some time ago and started to extend/modify CM to get Atrix support (atrix-dev-team@google)
  • Now CM will offer native support for the atrix, therefore (?)
    • a CM team will continue the work of "atrix-dev-team"
    • a CM team will build a own atrix support
    • the "atrix-dev-team" gets part of the "native" CM team
  • Options like webtop, dock, or fingerprintreader are not included to Android by default and have been build on top by motorola (or motorolas supplier), this because support is not included to native CM7
  • Will there be a plan to integrate this features above into "native" CM7?
  • Dock is already supported by the google-dev-team, and in they write that currently there is no support for fingerprint (which I would be interested in) and webtop. On other places I found comments that the fingerprint is supported by the version of google-dev-team, so what is right? No support in Ba2tF, but support in the weekly updates/current dev version?
  • Does CM support mean, that threre will be not only a CM7 version, but also a CM9 anytime in the future, or is this not clear yet?
Thanks for your answers!

CyanogenMod is community driven, for a device to be supported someone has to port CM to run on that device.

Different people maintain different devices (see: http://wiki.cyanogen...mmunity_Members) and different groups can check-in code to the main CM source repository. For example, at least 2 members of the Atrix-dev-team show up on the Wiki's Maintainers list.

Code specific to the Atrix is checked in by the atrix-dev-team on their GitHub page, and then passed to the CM Gerrit Review (http://review.cyanogenmod.com/) for approval to be included in the "official" CM Source Tree and eventually a future release of CM itself (thus why speculation is going around that CM7.2 will have official support for the Atrix)

About CM9, the official statement is "Our goal is to provide continued support to all CM7 devices back to the QSD8250 series of devices such as the Nexus One" (see: http://www.cyanogenm...progress-update)

The atrix-dev-team has ICS specific branches and appear to be looking into ICS, but while hopeful, there currently, and likely will never be, a firm commitment for a particular release schedule.

There are currently 3 different CM builds for the Atrix. The builds from the Atrix-dev-team themselves are going to have newer device specific functionality, as changes will wait for Gerrit review before being allowed in the official CM repo (for example, CM Nightlies aren't going to have Fingerprint Unlock support, as this functionality is still pending Gerrit Review)

Thank you for this thread everyone! This info and the understanding of community workings and work-product is soooooo hard to obtain. These are the kinds of things every new CM user (or prospective user) needs to read towards the beginning. Too many people can give up, not knowing if they will ever even be able to assimilate this information from bits and pieces they pick up everywhere by way of reading threads.

I've pinned this topic as I'd prefer to keep it visible for anyone else looking for this answer. Thanks for the detailed response ja450n.

Topic may be unpinned upon release of the official atrix builds.

This topic has been unpinned due to a lack of activity within Atrix-Dev-Team and our own official CM7 releases.
