Hi gang, just wanted to say thanks for all of the information I was able to find in these forums. I had tried in the past to figure it all out on my own but I just didn't know what I was doing and gave up. A few weeks ago I sat down and read and read and read, then tried and failed at some point (phone wouldn't boot) so I read and read some more and figured out where I messed up. Started over and got it working perfectly on my second attempt.
It really seems like a daunting task, and in all honesty I thought a "Nexus" device should be way easier... There could also be better a how to/write up for it... but I guess at this point it's almost pointless since it's a much older device. After a few days of running cm7 with no problems I realized that I should have documented the process...
Anyways I just thought I'd give thanks for all the info I found here, and to let anyone else that wants to do this for the first time that it's not as difficult at it seems, just jump in feet first and take it from there.

Thanks for posting this. I've converted a G1, a Cliq and three Nook Colors, but I've been nervous about converting my N1 since I use it for work email and quick picture taking while working in Colorado. I keep reading about issues with the camera and I'm a bit reticent to risk giving up the camera. See this http://is.gd/ZwVvxg for example. I'm not quite ready to risk giving up the ability to take pictures like that.
Of course, as always, no one measures how many people are NOT having issues.

It kinda depends on how you want to go about doing it. If you unlock the bootloader (the true way a Nexus was intended to be used), it is relatively straightforward. Unlock the device, flash on a custom recovery, use the custom recovery to flash whatever ROM you want. The issue is when you are trying to get around unlocking the bootloader. You are basically relying on security holes in Android to allow you to root the device. That tends to be much more difficult than just unlocking the device.
But there is a "how-to" in the wiki to install CM. Not sure how this compares to what you found (or if you already found and used it). http://wiki.cyanogen...ll_Update_Guide
