Flashed newest CM stable 7.1.
Flashed gapps-20110828.
Started up rom.
Problem: Market not found/installed on system. Attempted manual install of marketplace versions 3.1.3 and 3.1.5. Force close on both.
How do I get android market on my phone?

No issues/fc's so far.
EDIT: Issue found. Newer version of Marketplace crashes when trying to install/download an app.
Uninstalled, tried flashing an older version of gapps - 20110613.
Same problem as in initial post, marketplace not installed.Tried manually installing other versions, same result - FC.
Not sure whether this is a problem with the ROM, CM7.1, or 4EXT recovery. Any ideas?

Going to attempt to manually flash Clockworkmod Recovery via adb to phone (since I can't download ROM manager from market), then do a full wipe and clean install of CM7.1 and gapps 201108. Thinking is that maybe 4ext recovery has something to do with gapps not flashing properly. Will update with results.

Update:
Nope, still nothing doing. Same market issues as before when flashing gapps (both versions) with clockworkmod 5.
So, after trying multiple versions of Android Market, and 2 different recoveries, I still have no working Market app. The only logical conclusion to this problem is that there must be an issue with the ROM itself, CM 7.1, which is preventing market from being installed.
Now attempting a full wipe and flash of 7.1 RC1, and flash of gapps 201108 w/ cwm 5. Will update later with results.

Mixed results.
Gapps successfully flashed. Market successfully installed with gapps. No force close issues so far.
However, apps will not download. After pressing "install" and accepting agreements for apps, market says apps are "downloading", but apps never download.
Rebooted. Apps are now downloading, although at a fairly slow pace (connected over a fast wifi connection). Market is behaving somewhat erratically...force closing at random. But apps are downloading and installing successfully. So I guess some success is better than no success.
I'm really getting fed up with CM unreliability/lack of stability on N1. This will most likely be my last ROM update on the device, as I will soon retire it in favor of either the Amaze (which CM doesn't support) or one of HTC's upcoming phones (either the Ville or Edge).

I have never had any stability issues with the ROM or with gapps. I would try MANUALLY wiping the /system partition through recovery and then reflashing everything. The recoveries shouldn't make any difference, so you should be able to keep rocking the 4EXT recovery. Both of them *should* have the option to wipe /system under the Mounts and Storage menu.
I wipe my device on a fairly regular basis, but I have never had the issues you described above, but then I ALWAYS make sure I wipe my /system partition if I am wiping the rest of the device.

I wipe the system partition every time. Hasn't made a difference. It's all good, I'm just going to sell the N1 on eBay and buy myself and Amaze for Christmas. Then I won't have to worry about gapps or running out of space on internal storage or trying to get the right mounting script to mount the sd-ext partition on boot anymore.
