I am new to Cyanogenmod. The Epicmtd download is just the file name for the ROM correct? Or does the mtd in the file name mean that the file will convert to a mtd file system?

If you're on BML and you flash CM MTD (pretty much all of them since 12/21) It'll convert you to MTD before flashing the rom. After that, Odin'ing a stock rom with the original pit file will get you back to BML.
