The details:
• I have a NC I got from a pawn shop. It was sold to them and worked in store until after the battery died then they couldn't get it to work. Since I know the owners, they told me if I could get it to work, I could have it.
• The SD cover is missing, ie, no serial number.
• I had to buy an OEM charger to get it to charge.
• It absolutely would not boot into the OEM OS. It would hang on the boot animation every time, even after factory resets, flashing a new OEM ROM, or trying to use a ROM I found online.
• It does work flawlessly with CM7 and CM9, though the sound hardware appears to be defective. (It's entirely possible someone tried to charge it via the headphone jack.)
Assumptions:
• I am assuming that since it worked when it came into the shop and that CM7 and CM9 work that there is nothing wrong physically with the device (Sound hardware excepted).
• I also assume that it has been remotely disabled by B&N. Whether by the original owner when they sold it, or perhaps a lost or stolen feature has been activated.
The Task:
I'd like to restore the original OS to it and get it functioning. So, is there any way to do that given the circumstances? Also, is there a way to recover the serial number from the hardware without booting to the NC OS? I could at least call and see if it was stolen, and if so return it, otherwise perhaps get a replacement with the sound working.
Ideas?

Good luck. The stock nook ROM is near inaccessible on its own hidden partition, so unless the original owner knew how to use linux commands in the terminal emulator of the nook or picked up some repartitioning tools for the eMMC, it should still be on there.
Pick up an app on the android market called "nook tweaks", it helps alot on sound issues. It has it own options for the external speaker settings and the headphone jack. Volume gain controls and other options.

You will have to hook up that nook to your computer though and download an Android Debug Bridge for it. You can find that in the link above. In that thread it says B&N does not register serial numbers for the nook color though.
