I installed CM 7.1.0 and the common Google Apps package in November and when I updated Google Maps in early December I noticed that it became unusable due to graphical glitches: The update introduced 3D rendering which in general is incredibly slow and basic on the Hero but usually works to a degree, some 3D games (like Fruit Ninja) run "okay", some (like Angry Birds) miss textures.

The glitches appearing in Maps, however, add sporadically flickering rectangles or polygons to the map (usually brown or white) and destroy street names and other text information (most go missing or are replaced by empty boxes, some appear as black smudge, sometimes some are readable but go missing again when the map is being updated or moved). I thought maybe a later update would fix that but a few versions later I still have the same problems. I've already cleared the app data, uninstalled Maps and reinstalled it from the market with no difference. I would like to disable 3D display in Maps to see if it helps (just a performance hog on the Hero anyway) but it doesn't seem like one could disable it. The problem also appears when Maps runs embedded in other applications.

Does anybody else have the same problems and maybe found a workaround (other than reinstalling the old version and keeping it forever)? Could something be wrong with Cyanogen's performance settings on my device (CPU clock etc., the "dragons ahead" stuff ;) ) or is there another possible reason for this (apart from Google having bugged Maps to uselessness on older devices, which I don't believe)?

One reason I could imagine is that maybe CM 7.1.0 reports wrong hardware information to the Android Market and thus downloads application versions that are meant for different hardware that try to access unsupported features on the Hero? (such as a later version of OpenGL ES)

Yet another possible reason could be a broken device but since the problem is reproducable with every start, no matter when and how I don't believe in simply having corrupted RAM on my device and normal 2D apps and even 3D games work the same they always did.

Performance settings:
  • CPU governor ondemand, min. 264MHz, max. 576MHz (I think I lowered the maximum frequency since I got too many sporadic crashes; CM 7.1 installation had it set higher)
  • Compcache @ 18% (called "default" by the selection box, however, it was set to "disabled" when I installed CM 7.1)
  • JIT enabled
  • no surface dithering
  • no 16bit transparency
  • purging of assets allowed
  • not locking home in memory
  • not locking messaging app in memory
  • VM heap size @ 32m (unchanged)
Some screenshots of the glitches: (Unfortunately the board won't let me upload or embed them in this post...)

Hi,
Just one of those "yeah, me too" posts. Hero GSM (UK), with Maps 6.2.0 and Cyanogen 7.1. I haven't touched the performance settings, just done the usual upgrade process. In fact, because of the wonderful backup/restore process that you get with this romming business, I

- backed up.
- cleared all caches and data, factory reset.
- installed Google Maps before changing anything, with just enough configuration (wireless, etc) to allow Market access.

And I see road names replaced by while rectangles, and occasional weird text, as you do.

It's a real pain, because the alternative (GPS Essentials) FCs a lot.

These issues are present also on the last Android 2.1 HTC firmware, I think this is due to a hardware limit or some software bug in Google Maps.
The last version correctly working is 5.5.0
