Ok, so I am totally and utterly NEW to this whole game.

I just bought myself an Atrix which, much to my glee, came already preloaded with CyanogenMod. Having not much of an idea as to what the hell that was, I found this page, and read around a little.

Also, playing around with the phone, I found that the fingerprint scanner just didn't work, but (having a little knowledge of Cydia on the iPhone) thought that might have something to do with the Mod.

Reading through some of the posts, I saw mention of an update that included a working fingerprint scanner and thought all my Christmases had come at once.

Let me get to the point! In front of me I have the instructions page for backup and restore, along with a couple of required downloads, namely recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-olympus and weekly-29-jan-1012. The only problem is that the instructions are (a little) confusing.

Is there a post already, or an external link, that someone can point me to, whereby I can follow a "blond's guide" to what I have to do?

As the phone is new to me, and all contacts etc are all backed up already, losing information is not a big deal, but what I don't want is to find myself going round and round in circles!

Any direction would be most appreciated :)

Thanks in advance

1. Download ROM Manager for the Android Market if you don't already have it.
2. If you have the .zip on your phone, skip to step 4.
3. Go to http://code.google.c...12.zip&can=2&q= and download it.
4. Open File Manager and go to where you put the .zip.
5. Tap the .zip, and select ROM Manager.
6. When ROM Manager shows up, select Wipe Dalvik Cache and press OK.
7. Your phone should reboot into Recovery, and it will install the update. Don't worry, your data will be fine if you followed step 6.
8. Once it's done, your phone will reboot and you will be at the latest weekly!

It's not very hard to update CM. Every time a new ROM you want to install comes out, repeat those steps. Though I suggest you back up and wipe your data if you're gonna install a new ROM.

EDIT: While it's nice to be able to flash ROMs like this. I suggest that you also learn about the recovery image you have on your phone. Also, congrats on your (sort of) new phone!

EDIT 2: Trust me, knowing how to flash ROMs through recovery is very useful, especially for me, since I'm always between Android versions. ALWAYS.

Hello, I'm new here. But instead of making a new topic, I decided to reply here to what you have written.

I've tried those steps MANY times before on my Atrix, and every time, it won't boot into the recovery. Ever. I've tried the Touch version as well, which also does nothing. I have ROM Manager Premium. Help? I have no Cyanogen at all, just the OTA update to 2.3, and it's rooted.

Consider following the wiki, which I have just finished writing the full update guide for. The latest weekly at this time is February 5th

I'd like to begin by saying a big THANK YOU for the replies I got. But now I have a related question..

I also looked into CM9 and it "appears" to be a natural way to go. I found the following site with details:

http://www.iphoneand...trix-4g-update/

(hope it's ok to post that link, if not, I apologise)

The instructions here are very easy to understand, but it talks about a Google Apps package, but the link to that one is nothing more than a duplicate of the CM9 link.

The questions are these: Is CM9 the way to go? Is the Google Apps package required (or even recommended), and, any idea WHERE I can get the actual zip file from!!

(I know, I ask a lot of questions, sorry)

Generally speaking, most guides are unnecessary to just install a rom. As I suggested in PM, use the thread here http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1445052

It has both the install zip and google apps package you're looking for. However, note the list of things that do and do not work, and keep in mind that this is an unstable unofficial build. There is currently no officially supported CM9/CM7 build for the atrix short of some support of the nightlies (which I actually don't recommend anyway)

in terms of how to flash it. If your phone is set up in the way described in our wiki, the thread linked tells you what is recommended to wipe in your recovery menu. For safety, I recommend you clear data, cache, and dalvik cache from the advanced menu. Back up your files, and avoid manually importing any applications or data into the CM9 rom, as it could create incompatibility problems. This does mean that there is no way to upgrade without losing all your current data, but most of it is synced to the google servers anyway (when setting up the phone after flashing, disable backing up or restoring the phone from google servers, as that's a bit different)

OK, so decided to NOT take the CM9 route (as yet), and began following the wiki on doing a full update. Got stuck at one point. No matter where my sbf_flash and bootloader are, Terminal give me a "no such file or directory" when giving the first command of 'chmod +x sbf_flash'.

I've put the files on the desktop and in my personal folder and still nothing.

Any ideas? Is it just better to update with one of the nightlies to see if I can get my fingerprint scanner to work? Or should I persevere?

Cup of tea and a biscuit for the best answer!! :)

Are you sure your terminal is actually operating in that folder on your desktop before running the command?

are you running on a linux machine or a mac?  well... either way this will work for both..

when changing directory, you need to put a ' at the beginning and at the end of the full path to the directory.  its very possible you have spaces in one of the folder names.

ie: say the sbf is in a folder called "android stuff" on your desktop...  now Linux is CaSe SeNsItIvE.   so
 cd '/home/your username/Desktop/android stuff'
that should get you into your dir if theres a space in any of the folders, and just remeber the cases,  the D in desktop is always capital in linux.

once u have the shell in the dir you want then you should be able to chmod +x 'file name'
