So I have never played any of the elder scrolls before, and I have heard really good things about Skyrim and I want to try it. And I was wondering if I need/should play Oblivion first. What are your guys thought on this?

There's no real need to play through Oblivion to understand what's happening in Skyrim. Although there are a number of fun callbacks to the events of previous Elder Scrolls games (my favorite being a certain NPC you encounter in the Dark Brotherhood quest line, although Sheogorath's conversation with Pelagius is a very close second), you'll have little to no additional difficulty understanding what's going on if you start with Skyrim, especially given that it takes place some 200 years after Oblivion.

(Not sure what the proper etiquette is for spoilers on this board, so I just turned the relevant text white.)

Thanks thats good to know. I hate jumping into a game where you need to play the previous one to understand what is going on.

If I were you, I'd play oblivion then skyrim so that you can enjoy them both. I think if you played skyrim then went to oblivion though, you'd be frustrated by the older play style.
