Hello,

I'm new to this whole forum and experience.
My tech savvy = 4 on a scale of 1-10.

I have a Droid Incredible 2. It's a great phone but it's missing a feature I very much need on the road...

I am trying to make screenshots on my phone. While this is easily done on a home PC or on an iPhone, I quickly learned the horror of the fact it is NOT so easily achevied on a Droid. Verizon tech will NOT support it nor provide any advice, etc. (Very strange that they wont!)

I found out about rooting as an option but I keep thinking if I try that without help I could be doing some damage. I also heard rooting may wipe one's phone. However, Verizon tech itself gave me the code to unlock it, but other than that, I only really have apps and some settings on there right now. I use it primarily for calls, texting, pics, email and some web search. I'm light on app use. I could, if nec, kind of afford to lose any saved data and settings if I had to, and rebuild those (but would need to figure out how to re unlock it if nec).

I tried to learn about rooting on my own and a friend told me of this site. The problem is, I do not really understand it all nor can I make it happen for my phone by myself so here I am. I have seen some directions on googled searches but everything is muti layered, convoluted and is not all working the way it says it should. (Example: install this, now this, now that. But you need this, which only works if this is installed, only on Tuesdays during a full moon if you are wearing black--that's at least how it feels on my end)

My PC: Dell c521 Desktop - 2006 - running Win 7. 32 bit.
I regularly hook up a USB cable to get into the drive once mounted and do things like load music or get photos.

I will also note that for me, any time someone says something like, "Just" do XYZ, it's never that simple. I wish it were but it aint. So while I appreciate tips and advice, I would beg that only very detailed steps with real actual 'if/then's' will work for my use here.

Thank you all in advance for any help you can give.
I did a rough search in the forum but could not find this topic for this phone with Verizon anywhere else yet. if there was a thread, MOD please forgive me and please merge it in.

Check out this thread.

The steps to gain root access are a little technical, but if you follow the instructions you should be rooted within a few min.

Thanks Ronnie.
I saw the outline of steps and it looked doable but the first one stopped me. I ran the first bit and it told me my phone software was not compatible. The site above you shared says I need 2.3.3 and my HTC phone runs 2.3.4. This made me unable to get the first thing done.

I will have to try something else.

i have seen a few things in google searches but in most cases, somewhere along the line, the steps go a different direction than what my PC seems to want to allow.
ah well...

anyone else?

Also, MOD, I had thought I could receive a notification in my email that a reply was made to my post. None was received, which is why I had not come in here to find Ronnie's post a few days earlier.

update:

Called HTC. They did a search and came back to tell me they didnt think my phone, the Droid incredible 2, could even be able to make screen shots!
I said I had heard about rooting and they said if I did that it would void the warrantee.

Of course this is ironic, because my Verizon contract is up in April and I may just go get T Mobile and one of their Droids, which would work for screenshots. What this means is, I wont care about a warrantee on a phone I am not using anyway. So I still want to try to root it.

In the meantime...

I followed the directions on this link:

http://www.knowyourc...credible_2.html

and was able to acually make it work. When connected to my PC I could in fact make a screenshot of the phone. It worked rather nicely on several tries and it's a Windows application that must be run when connected to the PC only. So that's kinda good. But when on the road I still might need to screenshot so I need more.

EDITS:

Well I actually dove into this anyway and discovered this page:

http://androidforums...epare-root.html

and once I did the downgrade, I could now do the steps to make my phone rooted.

There were a few minor snags but I got through it, so it seems.

yes, all of this wipes settings and data but I can redo that.

In the end, I found a free screenshot app by 'Kastor Soft' called "Screenshot" and I downloaded that. It says it only works with rooted phones and I tried the app with great success. THIS is wondrous!

thank you forum and also all those in the links I read and followed. My Incredible 2 is as it should be! Now if I can set my email back up... lol
