Hello. First off, thank you guys for the awesome work you do. This is my first Android phone and if the stock user experience didn't blow my mind, Cyanogenmod surely does.

The phone is amazing, and I love its performance. Coming from a Palm Pixi, heck, anything is faster. But alas, I am a total power junkie, and I want a lot out of my phones. So I'm trying to use the 1.8GHz OC kernel. I very much hope you fine people would assist me with this.

So, how should I put this? Well, upon starting the phone after flashing the kernel, the phone is very, very slow, and the softkeys don't work. I can't be the only one with this problem, can I? I've tried a handful of guides for overclocking, but all of them are too basic and they fail to explain what to do if there's a problem. Well I'm new to this type of stuff. I mean, I did overclock my Pixi, but all you have to do on that is to download a kernel and use Govnah, it's mostly automated. I'll list the steps I took:
  • Using this guide: http://www.techwhizz...re-4g-1-80-ghz/ , I downloaded this file: http://www.mediafire...s2lw48de368zgvb
  • I then put my phone in USB mode and transfered the file to the SD card, then unmounted the phone and turned off USB mode.
  • I restarted my phone into Clockworkmod recovery, backed up, cleared both caches, and flashed the kernel
  • Next, I started up the phone, only to find that it is very slow and framey, and the softkeys at the bottom don't do anything. I checked the CPU frequency and it read about 1.8GHz.
  • Finally, I restored the backup through Clockworkmod recovery
So I have no idea what to do. Could somebody point to a proper guide or file to use? Has anybody else done this correctly?

All help is appreciated.

I think you might be overclocking TOO much. I don't know the limitations for the Inspire exactly, but 50% overclock seems to be about the maximum for any systems I've read up on.  I would try clocking it BACK to about 1.4GHz and see what happens. If it's still being weird, drop it back more. you are going 80% OC, that CAN'T be healthy for your hardware, and your software isn't likely made to handle it either.

If it's still acting funky after dropping it back, try setting it to the standard 1.0GHz and running it for a while. It MIGHT just be the Kernel build is buggy, or at least not streamlined yet.  I have an inspire 4G also and have been looking into different kernels for it (just running stock right now), perhaps a link for it and I could check it out also. But I can be almost 100% certain that the processor will not handle 1.8GHz very well. Lol.

Nevermind some of that, I just re-read your post. Anyway, did you know the stock CM7 kernel supports overclocking? It's under Menu->Settings->CyanogenMod Settings->Performance...etc. IT IS tweaking things around, and prone to....breaking stuff. Go a bit at a time. 20$ is fairly safe, but 80%...again, is VERY likely to be buggy.

Try this Kernel... http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1085725 you can OC to over 2.0 if you want.  Been using it for months now with no problem.
