Once you're rooted, overclocking is as easy as buying setcpu from the market.  Check it out.

BEGINNER ALERT: I just set up CM6 & it seems really slow. I'm just getting in to this stuff and wondering what you mean about SetCPU to 576MHz? I didn't figure we could overclock smartphones. How can I do that?

I too, am considering going back to 1.6.... Speed is important to me, but I like the features of CM6. Maybe I'll try CM5 anyways and see if that helps. I'd still like to try overclocking if I can though.
Thanks

Turn off surface dithering. Settings > Cyanogenmod Settings > Performance settings
SetCPU is a market application where you can set your cpu speed.

I wiped everything before I installed, I don't understand why I was having stability issues?  Should I have wiped from fastboot?  Should I have rebooted after wiping and before reflashing?  I really don't know what more I could have done...

CM6 stable is running blazing fast on my G1, way faster than 5.0.8 was. But I only have about 20 apps and they are all on internal memory (no apps2fat or firerat script) although I did use firerats custom mtd. With my 20 apps installed I still have 45mb free memory. I have Compcache on, jit and dithering off. Lock home in memory is on. All animations are turned off. I also used Titanium backup to get rid of that stupid news and weather memory hog app. I have to say, I think this rom right now is even faster than the stock rom that came with the phone. I think the main difference came after uninstalling news and weather and getting rid of apps on my memory card. I only have the ones I really use a lot on my phone. If I want to play with another, I'll just download it and use it then uninstall. Some people I know think that just because you CAN have 200 apps on your phone (with apps2sd), that you NEED to have them. The G1 was never intended to have all those apps and believe me, whether their on internal or external, having so many will slow your phone down.

I'm doing the same thing as far as download/use/uninstall/repeat.  How do Navi and Pandora run for you?

They run great! I can answer a call and Navi stays loaded and I browse all the time while using Pandora. No complaints here.

I think that zx final donut is the fastest rom I have ever used. Its only drawback is the awful theme. I'm not that fond of the 10mb ram hack either, makes me feel like the phone is incomplete.
Htcclay made some very nice eclare roms that I need to try again. But some eclare roms have audio issues that you have to fix by flashing a new kernel, then that usually messes up adb and other usb functions.
Other than that, I think cm6 is fantastic, but it runs low on memory, wich the custom mtd hack fixes, but it doesn't add any more memory to the secondary server for things like faceboot sync and google voice. So it would kill those processes and I would miss things like voicemails and such. That's why I went back to cm4. Its very stable, and multitasks well. And although it doesn't have many of the bells and whistles it still supports most newer apps. I'm waiting for another cm6 release, although I may try superbad again soon.

Hmm, what if you try Navi and Pandora at the same time?  That's the whole reason I rooted in the first place - so I could overclock and do both while driving.  When I was on CM 5.0.8, even the lock screen would kill Navi or Pandora.

I think the next ROM on my list to try is Dwang's Donut.

I find 5.0.8 very snappy, with lock home in memory and swap enabled. The only thing i find a little slow is adw launcher. now when you say cm6 is "way faster than 5.0.8", care to explain? i dont know how much...faster...the phone can run...especially when its a g1 or original mytouch.

I don't think titanium backup really removes the news and widget app, it will still hog resources .
you need to do it another way. I am sure  someone can explain how to do it the right way.

TX Big Mike for this GREAT advice. My CM6 was kinda slow on my G1, and i didnt know why, stupid weather app. With this settings changed it works great! btw i made my external partions 512mb and my swap partition 512mb, bcs i didnt know whats it used for :) that isn't a problem right?

I understand now.  I didn't let it sit and boot for a while before I went ahead and set everything up, I just instantly plowed right ahead.  I may go back to CM5 and give it another go, this time letting it takes its time to boot.

Does anyone know if the audio issues have been fixed yet?

I upgrade my G1 dream to experimental 6.1. And it more faster that any stable mod that I have been. And I wanted to ask what recovery and radio need for mod  SuperCSDIS. Can it work on my dangerSPL and AmonRa recovery. Sry for my bad English:)

I found that the only suggestion that seemed to make a huge difference was turning off animations.  Turning off CC on the G1 seemed to bring it to a crawl.  I increased my swap size to 64mb with swapper2 and have set my cpu to a max of 576 with setCPU.  I am using JIT also.  I no longer experience delays going home from inside an application and the widgets seem to load a lot faster.  Especially noticeable difference when I unlock the phone with the slider, goes right to the homepage with no delay.  My current SD card is a class 4.

Do you use Pandora or Navi at all?

6.1RC1 has made my phone a whole new beast. I get better performance with no compcache, swap, or overclock (I keep going back and forth with JIT). I'm looking forward to the new radio image that gives 14mb more ram.

That might sound crazy considering how much of a boost that all these tweaks gave CM in previous versions, but try it. Reflash 6.1RC1 with no swap scripts, turn off CC and set your clockrate max somewhere between 384 and 595 (overclocking is over-rated outside of benchtests because you'll run into other hardware bottlenecks sooner). Then have 3 screens max with few widgets and modest icons, don't overburden your phone with a kajillion apps, and set VM to 12 or 16 (higher if it's choking heavier applications). Go through all of your settings and turn off all the bling and ADW elements you don't need. Animations are the only option I indulge in because it makes my phone feel less old and the recent roms/kernels have allowed enough overhead for them, but turning them off does help.

And watch your phone fly. Home always comes up instantly, apps open quickly, music never glitches, fractal apps are usable (JIT and OC will make a difference with them), navigation doesn't skip a beat...for the first time, my keyboard expired because it's a demo version. I didn't even know it was a demo limitation because I'm always driven to flash a new rom for better performance.
