I was encouraged when I saw these instructions had been updated recently
http://wiki.cyanogen...ing&oldid=13635

However after installing the DREAIMG.nbh file the instructions were vague (IMO)  I had considerable difficulty so after I had eventually succeeded, I thought I'd try to help out - and maybe ask the FAQ keepers to modify the page a bit to help new-comers.

After installing the .nbh file...
The second header that reads "Rooting the HTC Dream" could just say "Next..." or "Get Telnet running"

Steps 2 and 3 really caught me out : what the lines mean is :
Press 'Home'
Open the keyboard
Make sure no icon is highlighted on the main window
press the following keys :  Enter Enter telnetd& Enter
If successful, then you'll see telnetd& written in the center of the screen.
The telnet daemon is now running. It has to be running for telnet to run.
Close the screen, press Home then locate the Marketplace icon

Now download and install telnet from the (very limited) marketplace that is visible. (Hint : search for telnet and load the ClockworkMod app - it's the only telnet app you'll find at this point).

Run telnet with the localhost and 23 options. Failure to connect to server means that something went wrong with the telnetd& command above.

Thereafter - go through the Amon_Ra's Recovery : Recommended section
Then the Amon_Ra's recovery process section
(The instruction 'Boot into recovery by holding the Home and Power button..' means power down the phone to off and then reboot by holding the Home and Power button down at the same time until the first screen appears on the phone - then release the buttons - then wait.)

Click on the CyanogenMod 4.2 Install link (in my case) and follow the instructions there - by this stage you'll be an expert :)

Hope this helps.

I empathise with your post and experience.  I (successfully) rooted my Tmobile G1 a couple of days ago with no previous knowledge, other than the vague hints you find across the Web, and managed to succeed on the second attempt.  I thought at that time the author of the instructions could have made it a little plainer for the noobs like me passing through. However, the instructions for 6.1.0 DS were good enough for an absolute beginner like myself to succeed.  So thanks to the technical author whoever they were.  Just one thing I would say that not enough is said about the recovery module and how useful it can be if at first you don't succeed, it's a life line.  I had no idea that the recovery module was not just a stage to flashing your phone but an important place, lifebelt, to come back to if it doesn't work.

Thanks to all the ppl who worked on these releases and 9/10 for the instructions, thanks
