Since installing Cyanogen Mod I have been able to use my I9000 as mass storage but not for debugging. Windows doesn't recognise the device when in this mode. I've tried installing the drivers with the Android SDK but they don't match. Today I tried upgrading from 7(.1 I think) to 7.2 RC1 but the problem persists. Any ideas where to start looking? This is fairly urgent.

I have got similar problem. On stock Gingerbread I can use USB debugging. I changed on CyanogenMod 7.1 Stable and eclipse's AVD does not recognize my phone any more. I can still mount SD cards and USB debugging is in notification area. Anyone, help?
EDIT: I starter Issue in bug tracker, http://code.google.c...569#makechanges

What is the real purpose of USB debugging?

USB Debugging allows you to access features of the phone that are typically used by developers. This includes giving you access to the phone through adb.

Try the CM guide. In there, under the windows section, there is a link to a modified driver file that should allow your phone to be read.

OK I found a solution. Having updated the Android SDK to the latest version and installed the latest tools in Eclipse I was given the option to download a new driver set in the SDK Manager. Having downloaded those Windows now recognises the device.
