Hello everyone!
I was hoping to get some clarification as to whether I'd be able to install CM7 without using the powerbutton. From what I've read on the wikipedia guide, I have to load into the bootloader/recovery and all that, and those sound like they utilize the power button.

I've never installed a ROM before, and the reason I'm trying to do this now is because my power button got busted and I already sent the phone to HTC once and had to get it fixed for 55 bucks, but I don't want to do it again because it's another 55 bucks and it'll probably happen again anyway. So I'm trying to get CM so that I can use the Trackball Wake feature that's included with it.

I'm very novice to doing this (I've done this way back with my old TMobile Wing, but never with my Nexus) so I don't know much about all this bootloader/recovery business. The guides are there so I'll figure it out, but I want to know I won't accidentally get stuck or shut down my phone forever (even though I know there are ways to start it back up by taking the battery out and in, I don't really want to arrive at that issue). I'm going to do this tomorrow so hopefully I'll get a response by then, but I really need to get this figured out so I can use my phone properly again.

Oh and I've already rooted it successfully with SuperOneClick - worked flawlessly. I've also backed everything up with MyBackup Root, I'm aware that enabling the bootloader will wipe everything. I also have the QuickBoot app that allows me to restart my phone - it also has an option for Bootloader, so maybe that's something I can use (don't remember if it has a Recovery option too).

Thanks in advance, cheers.

I don't think you can unlock the bootloader without a power button, but you should be able to load a touch recovery on there. I know that 4EXT is available for the N1 and I think you can download it from the market. From the app, you can install the recovery. Download CM and gapps and put the files in an easy place on your sdcard. Then reboot into recovery (if that app supports it - if not, you can use ROM Manager). In recovery, format your /system partition and perform a Factory Reset/Data Wipe. Then install both zips and reboot. Sign into your google account, get on the market and redownload mybackup and restore your apps.

If you are looking for more space to install apps, you can partition your sdcard in recovery (will erase the card, so back everything up onto your computer) and then install an app called S2E which will install apps directly to the ext partition. This works much better than the built-in "Move to sd" and doesn't limit the phone at all (well, except that the sdcard always has to be in your phone).

Thanks. So just to understand better, what is the purpose of the bootloader in all this? Is it originally needed to get the recovery? Do I still need to worry about unlocking/accessing it in any way or do I just skip that step entirely and go straight to installing recovery with the app you suggested?

Also I'll definitely look into your S2E suggestion, I've actually been quite bothered lately having to manage my space.

Thanks for the advice - I'm off to school now, I'll be working on this when I get home. Cheers.

Having the bootloader unlocked can help make the flashing process easier (and can help recover data in a major phone issue)), as it doesn't require root to get the custom recovery on the phone, but ever since they were able to successfully root the phone back with Froyo, there is no need to unlock the bootloader. So continue on and don't worry about it. :)

Alright, thanks for the help. Took me a while to get to it but I did it, got CyanogenMod running now, but I have serious issues restoring things.
I did the sd card partitioning as you suggested but I don't understand what to do with this feature or how to use it. I'm trying to restore my apps using MyBackup - restoring them all together was a disaster so I deleted them and am now trying to restore them few by few... but my phone is awfully low on space. I have no clue what's taking it all up - is it all the CyanogenMod stuff? Also for some reason Gapps didn't seem to install...

The worst is that when I try to go manage an app and move it to SD card, CyanogenMod just crashes. It goes to the loading thing and then comes back to the phone, basically it can't seem to move any of my apps to my SD card. I also don't know how to move them particularly onto the partition I made for it.

In short I have no idea what I'm doing. I've only got 42 apps that I need to get working and I'm having serious trouble doing this. Please help me figure this out!

You would need to enable the options in S2E to have the apps moved over and then reboot the phone. I always enable app, app-private, and dalvik cache. As for the crashing issue, did you restore any system-related settings? Because that can cause all sorts of crazy issues on a phone.

****. I did import system settings using mybackup... Is there any way to reset them all without having to flash the phone again?
Also I'm trying to install S2E right now (forgot about that) but it keeps saying I have insufficient storage available even though I have 13MB.

Edit: You know what I think I might just reflash it. Now that I think about it, most of my time was spent trying to restore apps which I realized was futile until I get S2E working so I might as well to avoid further issues.

Edit2: Okay I reflashed it but now I can't download anything from the market. I keep getting "[App] could not be downloaded due to an error". I'm trying whatever I can come up with but this is infuriating now. Is this maybe because the market hasn't updated to Google Play? It did last time...
Also Google Talk keeps failing to authorize. I don't even want it to but it keeps doing it and it's getting on my nerves...

Edit3: Okay nevermind. As I suspected, the market needed to update to Google Play. It did eventually on it's own accord and I'm able to install apps now.
I seem to have everything up and running now, so looks like it's all good. S2E works as well, albeit my phone is being a little slow at the moment but I'll give it a restart later when I finish updating apps and hopefully that'll do. Google talk also shut up, incidentally.

Cheers!

Edit4: Okay I think I spoke too soon... I was restoring two of my last apps, a couple of large games. They restored, but then when I went to the app browser and scroll to the "Uncatalogued" category to see if theyre there, the launcher froze and crashed. It then proceeded to go into this vicious loop of crashing and resetting, going between black screen and an empty home screen, just back and forth. Meantime, random google apps (especially facebook and google services framework) keep repeatedly crashing with the error box coming up.

I force rebooted the phone by taking out the battery (my power button sorta kinda works for now without the cover on) and after taking like 5 minutes to load, it loads back into this same vicious loop.

I honestly don't know how the hell this even happened and why it's not working after a restart. Everything was working perfectly up til then and it's like I essentially just bricked my phone. I really don't want to flash it again, and I would have to do this through my PC using a terminal I assume which is even worse... I've already spent 2 days on this with two flashes, come on, what the hell. Is there anything I can do?

Edit5: Alright, once again nevermind. I was able to handle it. My sister has an android phone as well so I used hers to copy the ROM back onto my SD card, then I booted into the bootloader (my power button, thankfully, still manages to work without the battery cover as it allows me to press down on it harder, don't know how long this will last though). Then went back to recovery and did my thing, I'm back to restoring everything now.
Should be much faster this time around as I know what I'm doing - got S2E there first, so everything should smoothly go to the SD card now, and force updated the market to Google Play right away as well. Third time's a charm, eh? I'll edit this post again once (if) everything is good to go.

Edit6: Finally. Everything is restored. And working. Holy crap that took a while, I spent the whole doing this and suffice to say I'm exhausted. Making a full backup with MyBackup as well as a ROM backup with ROM Manager now. Phew.
Thanks for all the help. Phone's better than ever now! CyanogenMod is a wonderful piece of software.

Sorry I missed all your updates, but I am glad you got it sorted. And it seems you are now intimately aware of how to flash the phone should issues happen in the future.

Yeah, definitely. I ordered a new MicroSD card as well for more space (16GB just isn't doing it anymore), and I made a full backup of my ROM so theoretically I should be able to flawlessly restore everything when the new card comes. I reckon I'd have to swap it out, par***ion the new one, then put the clockwork backups folder back in and restore everything through there. Hopefully it'll work.
