As a owner of the i1 I am kinda disappointed that it is stuck with android 1.5. Motorola has yet to say whether they plan and updating it in any significant way.

http://www.motorola....TOROLA-i1-US-EN

Is there anyway chance that it could get cyanogen treatment?

I agree, I like the phone but was disapointed that it was released with android 1.5, but I decided to get it in the hopes they would offer an upgrade or that a third party would be able to do it.  They could have at least started us out with android 1.6 but they stuck with 1.5 and said it was because they had difficulty incorporating android with the iden network and push to talk.

We are all waiting for some official word from motorola to say if they plan to upgrade the Motorola i1 to android 2.x but they have still not given any official or unofficial word.  With this being the first pre-paid (Boost) android smart phone available it is beginning to sell pretty well and once it is available on Nextel it should sell even better so there will be a lot of users looking for an upgrade.

This phone has been rooted:
http://alldroid.org/...sts&m=5876#5876

does this make getting cyanogen more of a reality?

I would like to see this available as well. A community driven option would be great. Provided of course that Motorola can't move forward themselves. It's worth noting that it was pretty much just released.

Question... to see cyanogen ports to some android phones, is it absolutely necessary for the developers of cyanogen to actually own the phone as well? i mean, what else can dictate anyone getting a community driven cyanogen rom for the i1?

Its in dire need of a port, 1.5 was soo 2008-09.

I would think they would need the phone. This is the first IDEN android phone. There has been no work done at all to port a IDEN android phone. This would be a huge undertaking I think it isn't going to happen.

Our best bet nag motorola anyway we can calls to there android department(already have done),twitter,ect.

Credit For This Tutorial:Goes To Skrilax_CZ Over At Modmymobile.com(His Tut Here)
A Few Things To Note.I Will Help You To The Best Of My Ability.If Theres Something Here You Dont Understand,I Can Guaruntee google Would Help.=]
(I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES SOUR.IF YOU KNOW ROOT,YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING INTO)
Setup:

--->Install ADB (HERE)and Motorola Drivers(32 Bit OR 64 Bit)

--->Download My Updated I1 Root Files.[09/17/10]

---->LETS DO This.=).
NOTE:After Install The Android SDK(ADB),I Suggest Adding The "Tools" Folder Location To Your PATH.This Will Allow You To Open Up A Command Prompt(Windows),And Utilize The ADB Tools From Anywhere.Just A Tip.=].
This Process Assumes You Are Using Some Version of Windows.
Process:
- Open A Command Prompt[Start>Run>cmd]
- cd C:\yoursdktoolsfolder[If You Added This to Your PATH,Skip This Step]
- adb devices (to verify the connection)
- adb push C:\I1RootFiles\Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
- adb push C:\I1RootFiles /sdcard/su
- adb push C:\I1RootFiles\rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
- adb push C:\I1RootFiles\Install-Root-sh /data/local/tmp/Install-Root.sh
- adb push C:\I1RootFiles\busybox /sdcard/busybox
At This Point,All The Files We Need Are Pushed.Next,
- adb shell
- cd /data/local/tmp
- chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
- chmod 0755 Install-Root.sh
-> keep your phone connected to PC

EDIT:Credit To Sebastian Kramer.For His File,"rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin"

I used ConnectBot Terminal,From The App Market. To Open A Shell there, just pick in the combobox "local", type any name into the editbox, and press enter.

open the terminal emulator on the phone and type:
- cd /data/local/tmp
- ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
DONT PRESS ANYTHING-WAIT,Until you see This message

[+]Forked XXXX Childs

press enter and type "exit" to close the terminal (or close it via the menu)

-> open the Terminal Emulator or ConnectBot on the phone (if you get the message that terminal died, dismiss it and run it again)
--> /data/local/tmp/Install-Root.sh

- exit
- exit

--->If You Get Nothing,The Script Was Successful.
At This Point If you Are In ConnectBot,You "Should" have [#] Instead of [$]
A Few Suggestions Before You Close ConnectBot:
I Would Sync The Filesystem.It Wont Hurt Anything,And It Will Update All Files With The Current Fileset.
After That I Suggest A Reboot.
To Do This,At Your Root Shell[#],
--# sync [Synchronize The Filesystem]
--# reboot [The Phone Will Power Off,And Immediately Reboot]

Your MOTOROLA I1 is Rooted.=)EDIT:[9/20/10],As Of Currently,There Are NO i1 Roms.Its Still A Work In Progress,But
Trust me,i want ROMS too.im getting ready to construct a project out of this,but i need your patience.theres NO Guarantee we will get ROMS,Im Working On It,But There NO promise.I Appreciate all your support,but please,if you dont like the i1 or want a new phone,Then Take The negativity Elsewhere.Thanks Again.

This Tut Is Based On the Recent backflip Root.I Only Take Credit For Rooting The I1.Nothing More.
NOTE:At The Present Time Of Updating This Post[9/17/10],I "Think" We Are Dealing With A Locked bootloader,like DX.Furthermore,i tried flashing a "Recovery-only .SBF file".i'm afriad i cant even get my PC to recognize my I1.=[.On Another Note,i E-mailed Koush about His DX Bootstrap,And Hopefully Ill get A Response Soon.
Anything New,You Will All Know.=]

Updates[9/17/10]:I Added In Busybox To our file setup,and also updated the "install-root.sh" script so that it will install busybox automatically.I rooted My I1 Again With The Updated Script,but if you find errors,be sure to let me know.
Also,I Exchanged The old su binary,with the magic root access one,and downloaded the latest Superuser.apk app to go with it.
The Su Binary Will Be Updated On Your First Run Of Superuser,So It Doesnt Matter.=].

Update[12/11/10].Im Willing to give Full Support On this Project,However I Need An I1,So I can Bring Myself back Up to Speed.Also,I See Some users Are Having Issues.Once you Push the Files VIA ADB,Youre Supposed to Execute/Chmod the files From the terminal ON the I1.
