As the title says,

I want you guys to test the email notifications through the WiFi connection on your N1.

For this you've to set the WiFi sleep policy to never and the Background and Auto sync option needs to be checked.

Well, I don't get any notifications. I went an extra mile ahead and pinged the IP address and found that I get "request timed out" error when device is locked and when it is unlocked, the packets are received properly.

Waiting for you guys response.

Note that I am not using any kind of MOD. just got the N1 (ATT version) 3 days back with the Android 2.1 pre installed.

Thanks and Regards,

Install WifiFixer and tell me if it still does it.

If you believe that "Wifi sleeps when the device is locked" is an issue for you, then just go to the wireless settings and press the menu button, in the advanced setting (or whatever the actual name is), set the policy to never sleeps/disconnects or whatever it is in English.

Besides the title, I don't really get what your post says, sorry  :P

I used Wifi fixer and it didn't help.

Can you guys confirm that your nexus one is not going to sleep when the screen is off/black?

I mean you can use the ping command and see if your WiFi connection stays active when the screen is off.

Appreciate the help. Thanks.

Did you try the settings I mentioned above?

I said clearly in my first post that my wiFi policy is set to never.

In fact, the problem with my N1 is that the Wifi goes to sleep the moment screen goes off and the connection becomes active, the moment screen is turned on by tapping the lock key(Even before you swipe to unlock, I mean locking/unlocking is not the point where it starts. It is the screen on/off) irrespective of what the WiFi sleep policy is set to. This is the narrowest I could get to this issue.

Thanks

I have the same issue.

However, it's only doing it on my WP2 network, and not on my WEP network.

For fix, someone needs to acknowledge this and I don't see anyone from Google doing this.

There are few who have this issue and many who don't.

I am gonna see the replacement phone which will be send by HTC coming week. Lets see whether it fixes this issue.

Regards

What it should be like: when the screen goes off, the WiFi connection is still functional, but laggy. Pings take around 300 ms with the screen off, and around 80 ms when it's on. I suspect that the WiFi AP needs to support this powersaving mode (e.g., store data packets while the device is sleeping), and if it doesn't properly, you run into the problems described in this thread. Maybe someone who has the problem can try with other access points and post the vendor/model of the faulty APs.

My N1 (AT&T) suffers from the exact same problem, both with stock Android 2.1_update1 and CyanogenMod 5.0.7.  Regardless of what's using Wi-Fi at the time (Wireless Tether, client-mode Wi-Fi via WPA2/WPA/WEP/etc.), whenever the display is deactivated, the Wi-Fi radio appears to shut off.  Certainly does not respond to PINGs, and any SSH sessions I have to the phone (via QuickSSHd) hang.  Upon reactivating the display, Wi-Fi is instantly restored, and everything continues where it left off.

None of the Wi-Fi sleep policy options affect this behavior.  The only way to keep the Wi-Fi on is to run an application that keeps the screen on (Wi-Fi Analyzer, Clock when connected to USB, etc.), which is a serious drain on the battery.

I'm thinking this is some sort of RF kill switch triggered by the display, but it's difficult to narrow down.  Makes the Wi-Fi useless for streaming audio and other things :(

Hey Mark,

It looks to me that this is the problem happening with more of ATT version than the T-Mobile.

Btw, did you try contacting Google tech support about this?

I am gonna get a replacement in the next couple of days and if that also has this same issue then It's quite certain that this is the firmware issue.

Negative.  Considering I voided the warranty by unlocking the bootloader, I don't think they'll pay much attention to me.  I could be wrong, though.. maybe I'll give it a shot.

Good :)

If you already rooted, you could ask them real nicely and says it happens no matter what ROM you are using. They might replace it if they're feeling generous?

I wasn't rooted but the replacement had problems in swtiching to mobile data when screen goes off which to my surprise now seems to be happening on my original too.

So I decided to keep the original and sent the replacement back. Will wait for froyo now.

I am NOT rooted with my N1 and I have the same problem. The G1 with cyanogen had never problems.
Whats the best to do? root it and make some cind of log so some1 can resolve it or go directly to google?
The problem is that it doesn't happen always or at least it didnt work properly anytime just before a few days ago.

I read in a other forum that it should help to manually add the wifi hotspot instead of letting it find it and than tipping in the pass phrase.

Unfortunatly I was a stupid and wildly change settings on my wifi Router so i cant't tell why it works most of the time now.

I have 2.2update1 running.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but since I've replaced my router and I'm no longer getting the "connection unsuccessful" messages after sleep I have run into the same issue described by the thread's parent.

It doesn't stop responding instantly, but does after a minute or so of no data. Wifi settings don't fix it, Wifi Fixer doesn't either(I think the new radio means the current version doesn't work anyways!). I have noticed that pinging my phone as it's initially sleeping tends to keep the wifi awake longer, so that it only completely goes to sleep after I stop pinging it every 1 minute or so. As long as I am sending/receiving any data wifi stays alive.

It's not a gigantic deal to me, as e-mail is the only real thing that is hampered(I guess google talk as well), but as someone without a data plan, I live on Wifi. I just have to physically turn on the screen now to see if I have new mail.

Ideas?
