I fixed my battery drain!

I had a pretty lively topic going before we lost the board about trying to get my battery life to something greater than 10h. I was experiencing a drain of 5-7% an hour when the phone was in use, but around 10% when it wasn't, even in airplane mode. The culprit, according to Spare Parts, was "Android System" preventing the phone from sleeping. Most of us were observing 90% or higher run time over the (short) life of the battery.
logcat did not show me anything of value. None of the recommendations from other users worked. We got a bit testy with people suggesting our batteries were old or misbehaving widgets. My last post was that I could cause the issue by running the Android Market, and resolve it by going into Spare Parts, selecting "End Button" behavior "Nothing," changing it back to "Go to sleep," then rebooting. By the next afternoon, at some point, and without running Android Market at all, my issue returned - though I caught it within an hour and the sequence I just mentioned fixed it.
In the 3 days since I posted my initial hypothesis, I found my culprit was not Android Market but it's "Notifications" feature! Now that market notifications are off, I can use the Android Market without putting the phone in a 100% Running state and I have not had to run the "End button" sequence again. I am now getting battery life similar to when I used Cyanogenmod 4.X.
There is something wrong with Android Market notifications on this ROM - at least for me. I hope this helps others.

He is right. Same thing. This is strange. I wonder can Cwirl or Psychi3oy look into this for us.

Things to note if you're going to try this... in all my attempts this was the only way to stop it:
Also, Spare Parts "Battery History" is your friend. If after a few minutes "Running" in "Other Usage" goes down from 100% you've probably fixed it. So far I've had days as low as 8% and as high as 30% and still had what I would consider battery life as good or better than Cyanogenmod 4.X.
I started trying 5.0.7 at Test 5. I had this problem from the beginning, in Test 5, 6, and 7. The afternoon I flashed Test 6 was the only time the phone ever slept, and only until I first rebooted it. I did not wipe when I went to 5.0.7 final.
I hope that helps anyone trying this method or trying to diagnose the issue.
- disable Market notifications
- in Spare Parts, select "Nothing" as end button response
- select "Go to sleep" as end button response
- reboot

eenteresting.
I'll say this: there seem to be a dozen different fixes for various 'battery drain' issues, and the leading culprit seems to be data usage (3g or wifi). Various 'fixes' have been posted but I think it's going to come down to a multitude of different things for different people.
Every little bit helps, so the above is a step in the right direction indeed.
I just wouldn't expect any magical mystery fix from this one option. Disabling things like geniewidget aka 'news and weather', turning off 3g (mine runs this way 99% of the time unless downloading large files), and any of a dozen other suggested fixes may all go together to fix various battery drain issues.
Suffice it to say Eclair is a whole new beast for Dream/Magic, and while I'm not sure of any remaining source code fixes for this issue, I haven't closed the bug in the tracker yet. Either we as users will figure out a set of things to disable from stock or a few niggling things might be found in source (or forthcoming 2.2 AOSP drops may make this point moot), but I'm confident that there's enough smart eyes looking at this problem to fix it one way or another.

I disable the notifications and, around 4h later, battery drain WHILE IDLE is - voilà - gone! Impressive.
It still goes down fast, really fast, if you're using data... actually, not necessarily data... if I'm in the browser, for ex, just reading a long page (SetCPU website, for an instance), page is loaded, and I'm just there... reading... slowly... it still drains. It's odd... but it's getting better.

Ok i've got to try this now. If this is it, I will be very impressed
Might explain why some people were having the problems and others not...

I think there's something wrong. When I disabled the Market Notifications my battery was 56% and after when I disabled market notifications and set the end button behavior to sleep and restarted, battery started to drain faster, within two minutes it was around 46%. Also, after restart the lock screen was garbled. I restarted again and now the battery is at 53% and the lock screen is also fixed. My battery issue is still there.
I also wanted to ask a question about a program "Flashlight" available in market. Does using this software cause any issues to the screen? I mean, I installed it but then uninstalled it thinking it my damage the screen. It does drain the battery but does it damage screen?
Thanks in advance.

I have the same pattern... I dont have drain while in sleep mode but I have to agree with the rest.. you can try many many things but as many others say.. using data 3G and WiFi will kill ur the battery pretty fast. I used "use only 2G" for 24 day and pretty heavy usage.. battery is not even below 70%... thats awsome but one cannot surf with 2G.

Exactly the same to me, as long I have Wifi on, the battery drain is significant (even higher is when I have Wifi on but no network connection). But when phone is idle, without data connection, the overall battery drain is very good, lasts two coplete days, no problem.
Thanks

It appears that there are two camps - those who were having draining issues when the phone should have been sleeping; the market appears to be the culprit for this. For me this is a huge issue because the majority of the time my phone IS sleeping, and I wasn't able to get 10 hours out of it.
There is another camp of those who's battery consumption spikes more than normal when actually using the phone. I haven't had a chance to really see this, but I will experiment with it to see if I notice it. It might be a case of overzealous overclocking. For example, if you're browsing, when loading the page obviously things will take up more CPU, but when just reading it, the CPU should slow down again and conserve itself. not sure what it's doing at this point and that might be a contributor. Just a thought. It looks like the First issue has been resolved, but since I just started using it again, time will tell.

Hrm, is it possible that this could apply to the N1 as well and these steps could be taken to improve battery life on that device as well?

I posted earlier that i had completed these changes as instructed in the original post. since that time i have :
wifi was on for sometime, the rest of the time 3g
gtalk was running
downloaded 2 apps from market
played 3 songs on native music app
taken at least 5 pictures
and made 2 calls
(i know all of these things cause my g/f was baby sitting and the music, apps, and pics were to entertain the child)
anyways, i have noticed NO considerable loss in battery life....
dropped about 3-4% (i had three bars when i made my first post earlier, and three bars still remain..) *bars are on the black bar mod, with green battery in the themes section of this forum.
i don't know that everyone else will find success with this method, and the spare parts trick i have tried before. in fact i do that every time i wipe and flash a rom.
this was the first time i have disabled the auto updating in the market settings.
thanks a lot for this.
