Well, hate to burst everyone's bubble...  At least for me this fix...wasn't...

Flashed the ROM about 6 hours ago, had 65% battery life - flashed while plugged in because I knew how much power that would use...  And the phone just died... 10% per hour basically with nothing running :(  Still showed over 90% system running when it's sleeping, so I don't think it was just the market updates which were causing it.  When I looked at app usage, Handicent was a major contributor so I just uninstalled it; i'll charge it up overnight tonight and see what happens tomorrow.  The only other app I have running is Touchdown for email - I need to have that for work - so we'll see.  I'll update again tomorrow.

Oh and the phone is still warm when sleeping... So it's still doing... something... system_server seems to always be active... what the heck is that anyway?

Happy to report another successful day on this configuration - out of the house 9h, battery down to 65% with light surfing, 3 short phone calls, 10 SMS messages... pretty decent overall!

As for the data drain issue, I have some input... test 5-7 I also experienced what I'd considered "unreasonable" battery drain when surfing or in general anything using data, similar to what has been reported here.  I remember this was originally attributed to people not knowing how much the battery died until the percentage was displayed in the status bar, but I think it was more than that.  This for me was resolved in 5.0.7 official but before I used the Nothing/Go To Sleep toggle trick and turned off market notifications.

It occurred to me that the market notifications issue might be one of code not expecting a fragmented data connection and an infinite loop of constant retries as a result. It could be similar for the browser and other data services - something as simple as the wrong MTU can add unnecessary overhead to a data connection which for a battery operated device could prove deadly.  So an issue with the TCP/IP stack, for example, in 5.0.7 compared to what the market or browser are expecting could very well be at fault here.

Just a thought... I'm hoping you can all find resolution to your battery issues!

I remember this one!  I think it means Latitude is sending you too many updates.  I think you either have to quit Latitude or not share your location with Google.  There was a long thread about this on the old forums - hopefully someone remembers it.  Look in logcat for a lot of messages that your location has changed.

Yes, I did read a lot to try to figure out my issue :|

I think we might be moving toward a workable hypothesis...  Since it does seem to be data related, it could very well be an issue with the TCP/IP stack and turning off market updates was just one facet of the problem.  Tracking it down might prove very difficult though.  As far as messages in the logcat for location changed messages, I have seen one or two, but not like every few minutes.  When you say a lot, what do you mean?  Also, how do you turn "Latitude" off?  Not even sure what that is.

Tomorrow i'm going to try starting with a full battery and only having 3G on, no wi-fi, no bluetooth and no GPS and we'll see what we get.

In Test 5-7, I was seeing updates on the order of 5-10 per minute.  Now it's more like one every 5 minutes.  That does not seem to negatively affect battery life.  Since this was only observable while on USB, it may also be because the phone was awake while on USB and might not have been a meaningful observation.  I did not have the system_server message like others having a battery issue related to this.

I'm hoping someone who knows more will chime in, but I believe what they did was either leave Latitude (not sure on the details there) or uncheck the option Settings -> Privacy -> Use my location.  I believe that was how they resolved it.  Mine is checked and I don't have the issue.  If this really is an issue, it could point to another miscommunication between the TCP/IP stack and Google.  It would be very interesting if this hypothesis proves correct!  The symptoms you describe are so close to mine I can't help thinking they may be closely related.
